16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) is the RNA component of the 30S subunit of prokaryotic ribosomes. The 16S rRNA gene is highly conserved across bacteria but contains hypervariable regions that allow for species-level discrimination. Therefore, 16S rRNA sequencing is widely used to identify and classify bacteria and characterize microbial communities in environmental and clinical samples.
